A Profound Question

Posted by Ed

Recent events have led me to ponder a profound question: In all of American history, who's the most famous convicted felon to have written a cookbook? Beyond the obvious, front-runners include Bobby Seale and Michael Milken. Any other candidates?

Sarah Jane Olson/Kathleen Soliah has written a book called Serving Time: America's Most Wanted Recipes.

He's not famous, but Brian Price, a former prison chef (and convicted felon), has written a cookbook called "Meals to Die For" based on last-meal requests. Sample recipes include Gallows Gravy, Chopping Block Cheeseburger, and Old Sparky's Genuine Convict Chili (spice measured in volts).

If Jeff Smith (the Frugal Gourmet) hadn't settled his case (seven counts of sexual assault, I think), he might've been in the running.

I'd be interested to see if there are any more. However, I'd be more interested to see a list of convicted felons who have appeared on TV with Elmo.

Ed,

You forgot about Martha Stewart. Now I'm not sure if she's actually written a cookbook, but I'm prepared to assume that she has.

The more interesting question raised from your post - Is cooking a sport?

I didn't forget about Martha Stewart: when I wrote "Beyond the obvious, front-runners include...", she was "the obvious."

Cooking is, of course, a wonderful combination of a sport, an art, a science, and a way of life. Just like chess!!! :)

(I'm still surprised that my silly little rant on chess got so many comments. The sport/non-sport question was mainly just an excuse to link to the Menand article, though I do find people who believe that quizbowl is a sport really annoying at times. My favorite response was a really dumb post on another blog proclaiming that chess is really intellectual, but I couldn't decide whether it would be fun to mock a silly blog entry, or whether responding would make it look like I cared far more than I really do about the whole sport/non-sport question.)
