Loquat, again

Posted by Matt

I had mentioned before that I was enjoying the music of a band called Loquat, and that some of their songs were freely downloadable. I ordered their first full-length CD, It's Yours to Keep, before its release, and it was delivered today. It's good. Some of the songs are older, but have been re-recorded. The version of "Swingset Chain" on this CD feels a bit slower, but I like it.

I was curious about what Pitchfork had to say about this album (not that I particularly respect their opinions), but they don't seem to have a review of it. They do, however, have a list of the tracks on the next New Pornographers album. Which apparently comes out in late August. With a song title like "Jackie, Dressed in Cobras," I'm hoping for more inscrutable Bejar lyrics. Also, the New Pornographers are playing in Brooklyn on June 25, but I'm afraid I'll be moving that day (down the road to a different apartment, nothing exciting).

Loquatur. It should be loquatur -- it's one of those weird deponent verbs, but I guess pointing that out would be just like pointing out that Ludakris spells his name wrong, &c., &c.

What a nightmare.

No, they're actually named for a fruit native to China. The "quat" common to "loquat" and "kumquat" is from some Cantonese word for "orange," apparently.
